Smartphone cameras have come a long way in the last year, but they don’t always provide an ideal shooting experience. Sony’s solution? Clamp a point-and-shoot lens — that actually contains a full set of digital camera guts — onto your phone.

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, there are two models coming. Make no mistake, Sony isn’t offering up some $70 accessory like the Olloclip. These are much more high-end lenses that communicate wirelessly with your smartphone — thanks to built-in NFC and Wifi.

The lenses appear to be disembodied parts from existing Sony shooters. The Sony Lens G features 10x optical zoom and an f/3. 3-5. 9 lens with a 1/2. 3 inch, 18. 9 megapixel Exmor sensor, which lines up with Sony’s discontinued Cyber-shot WX150.

That model retailed for Archeage account around $249 and was later reduced to $189, so this could be a fairly inexpensive way to improve your mobile photography options without having to pack a separate point-and-shoot.

The high-end Sony Lens looks like it’s built from the RX100M2. It’s one of the best of its breed, and it packs a 20. 2MP, 1-inch Exmor sensor and a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 3. 6x optical zoom. Sony has an MSRP of $749 on the RX100M2, so this one’s clearly going to be aimed at more avid photographers.

Both Sony Lens models attach magnetically to a small clip that can be affixed to a phone or tablet. They also feature Sd card slots, so you won’t have tap into your phone’s built-in storage. Your phone performs pretty much the same duties as the viewfinder on a run-of-the-mill digital camera.

Lag might be a concern, but if that’s the case then you should probably be shooting with a DSLR or micro four-thirds instead. For nice, composed photos the Sony Lens looks like a capable stand-in for a traditional digital camera.
