General Motors is reportedly putting its investment in Powermat Technologies to use. According to a report from Bloomberg, the largest U. S. automaker plans to build the smartphone charging technology into a handful of its automobiles.

The Powermat integration means some GM 2014 model owners will be able to leave the tangled cables at home and instead simply place their NFC-enabled phone on a Powermat-enhanced surface for a battery boost.

This move would crown General Motors the first carmaker to build the Powermat technology directly into its vehicles, though not the first to implement similar technology. Toyota's 2013 Avalon and Chrystler's 2013 Dart already feature in-car wireless charging devices from other manufacturers.

For many people with a smartphone, their Archeage client download car is a major piece of their life, Powermat CEO Ran Poliakine told Bloomberg. "And this is taking care of that part of life, " he said.
Powermat did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

The automaker, however, declined to comment on the reports.

"We have not made any announcements on Powermat since the release announcing our investment in 2011, " a GM spokesman told PCMag.
In Jan. 2011, General Motors dropped $5 million into Powermat, with the intention of eliminating the need for charging cords in future Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac products.

Powermat, which works with smartphones, MP3 players, and gaming devices, recently partnered with Silicon Valley-based Starbucks stores to add Duracell Powermat wireless charging stations to its locations in the tech-savvy California neighborhood following a successful test in Boston.

Still, there is no word on when the wireless technology will actually arrive in GM cars.

Don't expect to just throw your phone into your car and juice up as you drive to work, though. As GigaOm pointed out, Powermat is not compatible with all consumer devices and will require a special case for incompatible phones.
